Camp As Sayliyah, Qatar

Description

Camp As Sayliyah is an Army Post that is geographically situated on the eastern border of the Qatar peninsula. The base is a multi US branch Support Group. It is approximately 70 miles North East of the Saudi Arabian border and 15 miles from the Al Udeid Air Force Base. The base is an R&R for the mobilized units from Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, and Djibouti. The base offers USO & MWR recreational facilities and activities for the soldiers and its local residents.

The Education Center facilitates to 80% Army Soldiers, active & reservist component, 15% Marine, Air Force, & Navy, and 5% Civilian. The As Sayliyah Education Center also supports the Education Center at the Al Udeid Air Force Base, population 8000+ active duty airmen.

Living Conditions

  • The rooms are CONEX buildings which are converted storage containers outfitted as living quarters - not very big. These CONEX buildings are stored in large air conditioned warehouses. There are two people assigned to a room. A TV with many cable channels and DVD player are provided.
  • Each room has two twin beds with two drawers underneath, a bedside table with two small drawers, and a small metal locker to hang clothes in and store things in. The room is also furnished with a table and two chairs.
  • Electricity is 220v.
  • You are issued a set of sheets and pillowcase, mattress pad, one blanket and one pillow.
  • Bathrooms are located inside the facilities.
  • You must be dressed in clothes that cover you (shorts/pants and shirt) when you go to the shower.
  • Laundry: There are free laundry areas with washers & dryers. These are located in the lodging areas. Irons can be checked out. There is a laundry/dry cleaner on base with fee services.
  • Dining Options: Chili's, Burger King, Dairy Queen, Orange Julius, Subway, Green Bean (coffee), Pizza Hut.
  • Other facilities: A USO facility is located on post, and a small PX.
  • What cannot be purchased on the base can be purchased downtown.
  • Buses operate on the base taking individuals from place to place.

Working Conditions

  • 70 hrs a week
  • Office hours are 0900-2100, including an hour for lunch and supper.

What to Bring

  • Small flashlight
  • Durable clothes
  • Comfortable, sturdy shoes
  • Toiletries
  • Shower shoes (rubber flip-flops)
  • Towels (you can usually buy them at the PX, but you may need one en route).
  • Twin sheets (you can usually buy them at the PX) and blanket (you can use a sleeping bag too).
  • Pillow (also typically for sale, but you can never be sure)
  • Exercise clothing - nothing revealing!
  • Pictures of loved ones
  • Personal media devices
  • Sun block
  • Good, dark sunglasses
  • Cargo pants are nice for carrying things. You can't take a purse into dining facilities
  • Don't worry if you forget things. You can always order stuff from the internet.
  • Lightweight cottons and linens are worn during summer months, with warm clothes for cooler evenings and during the winter. Rainwear is advisable during winter.
